The “Home Energy, Reducing Costs and Carbon” subgroup was launched in September 2022, as a collaboration between Daniel Scharf of the Climate Emergency Centre (CEC) and Anne Smart of Abingdon Carbon Cutters (ACC).
In the UK, home heating is responsible for approximately 14% of the UK’s carbon emissions! Home energy efficiency is widely recognised as one of the easiest, cheapest and fastest ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
With the rise in electricity and gas prices causing a real crisis for many, reducing our home energy consumption is going to be more important than ever!

Great Big Green Week
To launch the new subgroup, ACC and CEC had stalls under the arches of the museum on both Saturdays of Great Big Green Week at the end of September 2022.
A doll’s house was used to illustrate where energy saving changes could be made, big and small, to a house.
Flags could be attached to the doll’s house to illustrate energy saving changes, with:
- Green – for improvements that had already been made
- Blue – for where improvements were planned
- Red – for steps people were unable to take
For Blue flags, pledges were also given to make those changes, such as installing thicker curtains and blinds or adding solar PV and double glazing.
For Red flags, barriers were collected – from the challenges of being a private tenant to planning restrictions, living in a listed building or the cost of installing solar PV.
