For the last 5 years we have been growing vegetables behind the ice-cream kiosk on Abbey Meadow, 2 years ago we started a new vegetable plot made of old recycling boxes outside Old Station House, and last year we were offered a big new bed overlooking the ornamental beds in Abbey Gardens. We are now members of the Incredible Edible Network.
What’s the idea ? Our immediate objective is to create herb and vegetable gardens that are attractive and productive, organic, and wildlife-friendly. In the longer term we aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and imported food, and encourage community growing.
Where ? In Abbey Gardens beside Abbey House, overlooking the ornamental beds. In Abbey Meadow, in the beds between the ice cream kiosk and the river. At Old Station House, on the sunny side facing Old Station yard.
Can you help ? We already have a small team of enthusiasts but will need more hands to make this work. In particular we’ll need help with:
- Sowing seeds
- Planting out
- Weeding
- Watering.
Helpers and visitors to the park will be encouraged to pick the produce ! Knowledge of gardening would be great but it’s not essential, we will all be learning as we go along.
